Music has been known for centuries to heal the soul. Arguably, every human being on this planet has a taste for different types of music. Preferences in music differ from person to person, and each type of music has its own effects. Soothing type of music is great for a calming effect on a stressed mind and soul. It helps bring relief and alleviates the pain and suffering in your life.

Often times, yoga is practiced with soothing music in the background. Yoga itself is a spiritual exercise, where through meditation and certain techniques, you learn to reach to your inner self. With the addition of calming music in the background, it helps to deepen that spiritual journey and experience, and make it more vivid and profound. The calm and soothing background music helps to become one with your spirit and to only think of peace while you are practicing yoga. You are thus relieved of all the worldly anxiety and the stress you experience in your day to day activities.

What is Spirituality?

The literal meaning of the word ‘spirit’ is the condition or quality of breath, soul and heart. When we breathe, we are spiritually awake, therefore it is said that certain breathing techniques can really uplift you. This is what is done through the art of yoga. Yoga helps incorporate certain breathing patterns into yourself which enhance your spiritual experience. Music can aid and facilitate in improving such breathing techniques.

Spirituality is being in tune with your inner self. It is in these moments of completely being in tune that you finally realize your deeper meaning, and improve on so many levels. It is a way of not living in the world for materialistic or social benefits but to live in tune with what you believe in and what makes you truly happy. Being one with your soul helps you take your mind off of petty day to day issues which truly helps you relax.

Music and Spirituality

Ludwig van Beethoven said, “Music is the mediator between the spiritual and the sensual life.”

Music helps with the connection to you inner self and therefore converts everyday challenges into great experiences. No music is more spiritual than the other. It all depends on personal tastes and likes.

Plato said, “Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.” While William P. Merrill said, “There is nothing in the world so much like prayer as music is.”

Music plays a huge part in our overall development and progress. In fact, music is everywhere in nature. From the sound of oceans to even the sound of the big bang. Even our materialistic lives are filled with music for instance, the sound of television, radio, and even the internet.

Swami Paramananda said, “There are certain things that have universal attributes, like music. Something of greater magnitude is conveyed by them. They connect us with the universal storehouse of life and knowledge.” And Osho said, “Music is the easiest method of meditation. Whoever can let himself dissolve into music has no need to seek anything else to dissolve into.”

 

Music helps us to create connections with ourselves that have great meaning. If we do not have this meaningful connection with our spirituality, we will be of no use in creating meaningful connections with other people or be able to face life’s great challenges.

Hearing Music vs. Listening to Music

There is a huge difference between the two terms written above. While hearing is a mere involuntary and half hearted involvement in the whole process, listening is the actual involvement where all the senses of an individual are fully engaged to the process. Listening to music helps us evoke our emotions and thought processes. There is more awareness when you listen where you completely focus on your music as opposed to your surrounding world.

Carl Jung said, “Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakens.” This is what listening to music does to us. It awakens our soul.

The Beauty in Music

Music brings harmony inside of us. It teaches us to be comfortable and to enjoy the flow of positive energy within us. When we listen to the music that we truly enjoy, we tune the world out and focus on the music we are listening to and become one with our inner self. Some people think that they do not thoroughly enjoy music or do not like it as much. These people have not really listened to it on the level that truly touches one’s soul. For you to truly hear music, you need a calm and quiet heart and a non-chaotic mind.

Music helps us appreciate the good things in life, be it any form of art or science. There is beauty all around us. We just need a tool to help us identify that beauty sometimes, and music is that tool.

Music comes from inspiration, and since it comes from inspiration, it is an act that could easily be linked to spirituality. Music is never random. There will always be harmony in music.

Although the type of music you like listening to is your own personal choice, but calm and soothing music is always great at calming and soothing your soul. Try meditating along with listening to calm music. It will be an experience out of this world where you will be able to listen to your inner self in complete harmony with your music. Music is known to play with our senses and emotions. It results in our personal feelings to be heightened and our souls to feel alive.

Deep involvement and participation in music helps relieve anxiety and depression. If you listen to the right kind of music that is perfectly in tune with your soul and spirit, you will have the ultimate calming effect which will help you become one with your spirit and nature.
