Many people have jobs where they are required to put on a smile, or act polite to their customers. Most of the time, these people are not truly happy and their smiles are not genuine. We have gotten so used to hiding our true feelings in society that we no longer know when our own smiles are real or not. So, how do you smile like you mean it?
The answer is simple; you have to be happy in order to give off a genuine smile. Most people can tell if your smile is genuine or not; it has to do with your eyes when other people look into them. The eyes never lie and there is something subliminal in your entire facial expression that will tell somebody if your smile is real or not.
If you are not happy, then you need to find a way to get happy. Of course, this is easier said than done. You may be in a bad situation in your life that you cannot get out of. All you can do is to make the best out of a bad situation. Try to focus on the good things you have in your life.
Perhaps you live in an affluent country where you get food, water and clothes every day. In poor countries, these necessities would put a great big smile on people’s faces. You need to appreciate the good things you have and smile about it. In fact, when you are in a situation that requires you to smile, it might help to think about the positive aspects of your life. That way, you may actually show a smile that is genuine, instead of a fake smile that will irritate other people with whom it is obvious to.
Did you know that smiling is easier than frowning? Even if you are a miserable person who feels wretched, try making yourself smile every once in a while. Then, look in the mirror and see yourself smiling. You may cheer up quicker than you think while looking at your smile. The whole point is trying to cheer up so your smile becomes genuine. Putting on a great smile could be the key to success in your life. But it’s important that you try to make your smile more genuine instead of portraying a fake one. The reason is because people can pick up your body language and facial signals, which will tell people if you’re faking the smile or not.
If you are a really good actor, you may get away with faking your body language, facial signals and smile, all at the same time; but you have to be very convincing. A little slipup in any of these aspects and it will give away your smile as not being real. If you have to go to great lengths to put on a smile, then it will never be genuine. A smile should come out of you naturally and without thought or hesitation. That is the only way it will ever truly be a genuine smile.
If faking a smile is so hard for you because you are an unhappy person, then your only option left is to figure out a way to be happier in your life.
You could try the usual route of therapeutic sessions and antidepressant medication, but will the results of these give you a genuine smile? Most likely, the therapy sessions will only make you more depressed because you will talk about all your problems and tragic stories out loud.
As for the antidepressants, they may temporarily alter the chemicals in your body to put you in a better mood which could give you a nice smile. But would a smile in this situation be considered genuine? If you have to drug yourself up to give off a convincingly genuine smile, then it technically isn’t genuine. In order for the smile to be truly genuine, it has to come from within you without any mind altering drugs. Besides, you will be a happier person in the long run if you simply make real changes to your life. That way, you will have a reason to be happy and smile more.
You have probably met people in your life that are naturally cheerful and happy all the time. On the other hand, there are those who are not happy and are always frowning. Why do you think these two kinds of people got to be the way they are? You could blame it on their childhood experiences or them having their dreams unfulfilled, but in the end it is about knowing who you are.
A lot of people walk around not really knowing their purpose in this world. They feel lost and isolated all the time, which causes them to harbor feelings of loneliness. Would you ever be able to give off a genuine smile while feeling like this? Of course not, and this is what separates the happy people from the unhappy.
If you feel like you are never able to smile like you mean it, then you need to do some soul searching and self discovery. Figure out who you are and what you can do in this world that makes sense to you. Don’t live your life according to society’s or somebody else’s standards. Know who you are and live your life according to your own standards. You’d be surprised how quickly your smile will subconsciously reflect on your face without you even realizing it.
We all want to find happiness that makes us smile. Nobody likes feeling awful all the time. If you can find a way to bring your smile to life on its own, it will change your whole life for the better. The people around you will be nice to you and you’ll get more of their attention.
Whether you are trying to impress your boss at work or trying to pick up a girl at a bar, a genuine smile is the key to any kind of success and happiness in life. But first, you have to know what you want in order to achieve it. And when you do smile, smile like you mean it.
